It may (or, to be fair, may not) alleviate the anticipatory discomfort of the procedure that sounded to me a little too much like self-waterboarding. In any event, the source is pretty unimpeachable and I may work up the courage to try it myself, since I have similar respiratory issues, especially in the winter.
