The Sprout and I had the opportunity to check out the Spider, the Man, the Girl and the villians...and well...it is good. I think I need to see it again to let this 2 Hr 20Min movie soak in.
The Good: There are a lot of really great moments in the movie and they come at you quickly alternating between tender moments, angst-ridden peter moments and intense action scenes. Repeat. The tender moments are really good...especially those with Harry Osborn and Gwen Stacey. The action is amazing, I have not been a huge fan of the special effects in the original Spiderman, 2 was better but I really felt like I could see the 'seams' in the digital effects with 3 the effects are integrated exceptionally well and the camera movement is amazing.
If you go back and compare the sand effects from The Mummy to those for the Sandman in Spiderman 3...you will see what I'm talking about.
The Bad: Unfortunately the chemistry between Tobey and Kristin really isn't working for me any longer. Plus...I think the Perez Hilton may have poisoned me on Kristin Dunst thru all of his blog hate. When you have Kristin Dunst and Bryce Dallas Howard in a scene together...Bryce (?) shines and Kristin is just plopped in the scene.
And then there is the Tobey...or as the evil Perez Hilton has dubbed him...Tubby...and boy does it show. He looks bloated and miserable throughout the movie and there are at least a couple of scenes when he is wearing the spidey suit where it looks like they have super-imposed his head on a much better body. To his credit...there are scenes where he is actually working, those scenes are great, the rest feel like he was forced on set with a cattle prod.
There is certainly a bit of cheese factored into Spiderman which is fine, fun and to be expected. You will also have to suspend disbelief in the convienent creation of Venom and Sandman...but this is a comic book superhero movie...not a WWII biopic.
Overall...you probably will see this movie over the weekend...and it is an amazing opening to the Summer movie season. It is unfortunate that both Tobey and Kristin plod through the movie because with more conscientious actors in these lead roles this movie would have evolved from popcorn money maker to award worthy popcorn money maker.
If they do move forward with the franchise...let's get Topher Grace/Jake Gyllenhall as Peter and Bryce Dallas Howard as MJ.
