TAMPA - A woman towing a car packed with nine dehydrated cats and their waste ran into trouble Tuesday when investigators saw the vehicle, an official said.
Tampa police charged Donna L. Glover, 46, with nine felony counts of animal cruelty and nine misdemeanor counts of improper confinement after working with Hillsborough County Animal Services.
The cats had been in the car for about four days, investigators say.
Glover, who has no known address, was held on $22,500 bail at Orient Road Jail on Tuesday.
According to a criminal report affidavit, a Tampa police officer noticed the cat-crammed Nissan Altima atop a trailer in a parking lot at 1401 E. Fowler Ave. on March 30. Police returned about 1 p.m. Tuesday and saw the cats still inside the car, with the windows cracked about 1 inch, the affidavit states. There was no water for the animals inside, the affidavit states.
On Tuesday, an animal-services investigator stuck a thermometer inside the car through a cracked window and read the temperature at 110 degrees Fahrenheit, which was a hazard to the cats, said Marti Ryan, an animal services spokeswoman.
When the outside temperature is 80 degrees, the temperature inside a car can climb to 102 degrees within 10 minutes, Ryan said. The resulting heat stroke "can literally cook the brain," she said.
Ryan said the animals were extremely dehydrated and had discharge from their eyes. Urine and feces covered the inside of the car, Ryan said.
"It was a horrible environment for the animals," she said.
Police identified Glover through a suspended New Mexico driver's license, the affidavit states.
Investigators confiscated the cats, which are being evaluated and treated, Ryan said.
